Within the walls of the Red you won’t find a T.V, jukebox or bandit, just the crackle of the open fire and the pulse of conversation and laughter.
This old coaching inn has served the village and surrounding hamlets of Cotherstone with fine ales since its foundations were laid in 1738. I'd describe this pub as a traditional, opened beamed, dales pub. Theres an open fire in the front bar and often a livley game of dominoes (5's & 3's) being played. The pub has a few claims to fame, aside from having Hannah Hauxswell as a neighbour, and playing part to one of the final sketches of 'The Fast Show' The pub was the last heather thatched roof within the village, and was only removed in the thirties. The pub is in the Good Beer Guide 2011, was Teesdale pub of the season 2009, 'Runner-up' Darlington CAMRA Country pub of the year 2007, 2008 and Rural Community Pub of the year 2008. It serves 2 real ales all year round, Jennings Cumberland and a local or national guest.

The Lad's Prayer

Our Beer which art in 'barrels
Hallowed be thy drink
Thy will be drunk, I will be drunk
At home as it is in the local
Forgive us this day our daily spillage
As we forgive those that spillage against us
And lead us not into the poncey practice of wine tasting
And deliver us from alco-pops
For mine is the bitter the ale and the lager
Forever and ever. Barmen
